How to Prepare

Attend Preparation Meetings

These meetings are essential to getting ready for trek. Mark your calendar:

Physical Preparation

Trek involves walking 6–7 miles on Tuesday and Wednesday while pulling handcarts. Start preparing now by walking regularly and building endurance. Wear the shoes you plan to use on trek to break them in.

Spiritual Preparation

Study the 2026 youth theme — "Walk with Me" (Moses 6:34). Read "Following the Pioneers" by President Oaks. Learn about pioneer history and the sacrifices early Latter-day Saints made. Come with a willing heart and a desire to grow closer to the Savior.

  • These are transported to the campsite by your support team — not carried in your handcart
Do NOT Bring

  • 2–24" bungee cords with plastic tips to secure the water cooler to the back of the handcart and tie down tarps
  • 2–3 squirt bottles or large spray misters to keep trekkers cool

Clothing Guidelines

Three ways to get your pioneer clothing: thrift/modify, sew, or buy ready-made.

Thrift & Modify

This is the most economical approach and can be very successful! Look for natural fabrics (cotton, linen) in earth tones. Many modern items can be modified to look period-appropriate.

Tips for Finding & Modifying

Where to Look

Sew from Patterns

If you enjoy sewing or want the most authentic look, making your own clothing from patterns is a great option.

Buy Ready-Made

If you prefer to buy ready-made clothing, several vendors specialize in pioneer trek attire. This is the quickest option but generally the most expensive. Order early to ensure availability and proper sizing.
